History of Pfaltzgraff

Pfaltzgraff, originally a pottery company, was started by a German immigrant to America , George Pfaltzgraff and is now well known for its high quality ceramic products available for the kitchen and home. Pfaltzgraff began producing salt-glazed stoneware in York , Pennsylvania in 1811. The Pfaltzgraff name originates from the Pfaltz, located in the German Rhineland. The Pfaltzgraff's castle bearing the family name still stands today and is incorporated onto the back of every dinnerware piece Pfaltzgraff makes.

Early in the history of Pfaltzgraff, the company produced storage crocks and jugs for preserving food. Production then changed to animal feeders, poultry feeders, and later to red clay flower pots. In the 1940's and in the 1950's, household products, giftware, and the company's first line of dinnerware were produced.

The Pfaltzgraff Pottery Company changed its name in 1964 to The Pfaltzgraff Company. There are several Pfaltzgraff patterns that are among the best-loved dinnerware designs in America , and these include: Yorktowne, Naturewood, Folk Art, and Pistoulet.
