How to Take Care of Your Stainless Steel Flatware

You paid a lot of money for your stainless steel flatware. Even if you paid very little for your flatware, do you really want to have several pieces that are discolored and unusable? You will waste money and time to find replacements for your stainless steel flatware pieces. Here is a quick guide how you can keep your flatware beautiful, shiny, and clean. Do this for all your knives, forks and spoons - and all other kitchenware.

Harmful Practices to your Stainless Steel Flatware:

DO NOT (do the following to your stainles steel flatware) :

  1. Soak yourFlatware
  2. Leave food particles on flatware after use.
  3. Use highly chlorinated liquids, Clorox bleach, etc.
  4. Use chlorinated powdered cleaners.
  5. Store flatware when residual moisture is visible.

 

Do the Following to Prevent Future Problems When Using Your Stainless Steel Flatware

DO

  1. Rinse food from flatware as soon as possible.  Stubborn stuck-on food may be brushed under running water.
  2. Machine washing- use a mild chlorinated detergent, place all knife and fork handles up.  This is contrary to some dishwasher manufacturers instructions but if a customer adds or removes part of the load it is much safer with the handles up.
  3. Remove flatware and finish drying any residual moisture with a clean towel.
  4. Use a good stainless steel polish every 6 months or once a year to restore its original luster if necessary.
