ALLOYS USED IN STAINLESS FLATWARE
There are three common types of stainless types of stainless alloy used in flatware manufacturing. Choosing the type best suited for your operation depends on your needs for appearance, durability and price.
18/8 Stainless
18/8 refers to 18% chrome and 8% nickel content in the alloy. 18/8 offers superior resistance to rusting and corrosion. Because of its nickel content, it will keep its color and luster longer than other grades of stainless.
18% Chrome Stainless
18% Chrome Stainless contains 38% more chrome than 13% chrome stainless. Flatware made of 18% chrome stainless will stand up to heavy commercial use better than 13% chrome stainless and is priced only slightly higher.
13% Chrome Stainless
A 13% Chrome Stainless content is the minimum acceptable government standard for stainless flatware. 13% chrome stainless offers the least protection against rusting and corrosion. Appropriate for use when price is the main consideration.
