Kitchen Remodel - What you Need to Know

Filed under: Kitchen — webmaster @ 11:30 pm

You have decided to make the plunge and begin to plan your kitchen remodeling project. There are so many questions and youÂ’re not sure where to start. There are some steps you should follow to help you survive what is probably the most intense home improvement project you will ever embark on.

So where do you start? One decision that comes first is who is going to be doing the project. If you are thinking of making this a do it yourself project, take a long hard look before diving in.

A full kitchen remodel requires a tremendous amount of different types of skills. Beside the obvious trade skills of carpentry, plumbing, electrical there is the organizational skills and decision making ability. If you intend to do the project as a couple make sure your relationship can withstand the stress. A beautiful kitchen doesn’t outweigh a happy marriage.

The key to a smooth kitchen remodel can be summed up in one word, Planning! If that didn’t sink in, read that last sentence again. I can’t stress strongly enough how important the planning stages are in a kitchen remodel. There are a hundred reasons not to rush into a project like this. If everything goes perfectly while installing a new kitchen, it is still rather trying.

Add some speed bumps into the mix and it turns into a pull out you hair experience. You will need to do as much as possible in order to not leave anything out. Read all you can find on the subject, visit forums, look in magazines for ideas and talk to your friends and family who have already took the plunge. Learn what to expect during your Kitchen Remodel

A modern kitchen today is a large investment of money. Cabinets and appliances are a major part of that expense. These are amongst the first decisions you will need to make. Even before you see a kitchen designer consider your alternatives when it comes to color and style of the cabinets. This will give you a base to start from. There are countless cabinet companies and different quality cabinets. When you finally get to a showroom that is the time to begin down the road of how much and how good a cabinet you want and can afford.

That brings up another important issue in the planning stages, a budget. You will need to determine what the total budget your willing to spend on this project. Without making a budget the price can quickly escalate out of control. A kitchen project that started at an affordable $15,000 without budget parameters can quickly turn into an $80,000 renovation. This will likely end in frustration and no new kitchen.

Set the limits early and then work within those limits. When you have your spending limit figured out take off a percentage for unforeseen costs. They will almost always come about at some point. At least 15% in my estimation should be allotted for cost overruns, and that is pretty conservative.

If you do decide to do the project yourself or become your own GC, make sure you will have the time to do it. In most kitchens, especially in homes with children, not having a kitchen is a major inconvenience. A husband, who drags his feet getting a new kitchen installed, will find himself in the doghouse faster than fido after he chews up the couch! The best advice I can give you is to do your homework. There is so much great info available on the internet today that it isn’t too difficult.

A Solid Kitchen Remodeling Investment: Kitchen Countertops

Filed under: Kitchen — webmaster @ 10:53 am

Besides your cabinets, there are few areas in your kitchen that
get as much work and use as your kitchen countertops. As you
begin to think about kitchen remodeling, replacing and updating
your kitchen countertops should be at the top of your list.

Now, obviously; there are a number of different options
available to you in countertops for kitchen remodeling. If you
don’t already have an island in your kitchen, you may want to
consider adding one in your kitchen remodeling plan. At the very
least, you’ll need to think about the material you want to use
in your kitchen remodeling project.

Perhaps the least expensive countertop material on the market is
laminate. This type of material is also a good choice if you
would like to do some of your kitchen remodeling yourself. A
word of caution, however. If there are a lot of angles or curves
in your existing kitchen or in your kitchen remodeling plan, you
are probably better off going ahead and having a professional
install the laminate for you. Even with the cost of labor,
laminate is still a bargain.

Granite countertops are an extremely popular and attractive
option for kitchen remodeling projects. Not only is granite long
lasting but it is also more affordable than other kitchen
remodeling countertop materials. While granite is not a job for
the kitchen remodeling do-it-yourselfer the added expense of
having it professionally installed can pay off in an increased
home value.

Ceramic tile has traditionally been a number one choice for many
kitchen remodeling plans because it’s available in a wide
variety of colors and is resistant to heat. Unfortunately, there
are a few downsides to ceramic tile that you should be aware of
before you rush out and begin selecting samples for your kitchen
remodeling project. First, ceramic tile must generally be
installed by a professional contractor. It’s difficult and can
be time consuming to install which means that this can really
take a toll on your kitchen remodeling budget. Second, ceramic
tile is not impervious to scratches. Finally, ceramic tile can
be detrimental to delicate china, glass and crystal.

Be sure to take in the factors of cost, durability and ease of
use when you are selecting a countertop material for your next
kitchen remodeling project and you’ll be sure to find a material
that is both beautiful and functional.

Mexican Recipes – World Class Dishes In Your Kitchen!

Filed under: Kitchen — webmaster @ 11:28 pm

Here are two **Must Try** Mexican recipes! They are HOT, tasty and so easy!

Chiles Rellenos Meatballs

  • 12 small potatoes, or 2 large baking potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound Anaheim chili peppers
  • 1/2 cup yellow onions — minced
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • black pepper — to taste
  • garlic salt — to taste

*Anaheim chilies, roasted, peeled and diced.

Peel and boil potatoes until just tender. Let potatoes cool. In a large bowl break up potatoes to make a lumpy mixture, do not mash. Saute ground beef in 2 tablespoons vegetable oil until browned, drain well. Add beef to potatoes then add chiles, chopped onion and egg yolks.

Add seasonings (salt, pepper, and garlic salt). Mix and form into egg-shaped balls about 1-1/2 inches long. Dip each ball in egg whites (beaten slightly) then roll in flour. At medium heat, cook in vegetable oil about 1/4-inch deep. Brown well, then drain on paper towels. Serve hot, at room temperature, or refrigerate and reheat at serving time.

Note: Both Mexican Recipes yields between 4 to 6 servings.

**Our** Family Secret Salsa

(shhhtttÂ… ItÂ’s one of my secret Mexican recipes)

  • Tomatoes — quartered
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/4 medium yellow onion — coarse chop
  • 3 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • salt — to taste
  • 1 cup cilantro — chopped
  • 6 whole jalapeno peppers, fresh — to taste
  • 4 whole habaneros peppers, fresh — optional

Fill blender with tomatoes, run at lowest setting until no large chunks are left. Add remainder of ingredients and repeat running blender until no large chunks are left. Sample and add items to taste as necessary.

If you’re not sure how something will affect you in the quantity given, use the smallest unit of it at first, then progressively add more until you are satisfied. This is really important with the habaneros. The salsa will be at its hottest right after you make it, but will cool down the longer it sets.
